Akron City Council Reopening Application Process

for 35 Unclaimed Doorbell Cameras

Eligible Households of Ward 3, Ward 4, and Ward 5

Application Process will reopen on Friday, September 15th, 2023, from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Akron, Ohio, September 8, 2023—Akron City Council is reopening the application process for a Pilot Doorbell Camera Safety Project to distribute 35 unclaimed Ring Doorbell Cameras, remaining from residents who did not pick up or respond to numerous attempts to contact them.  Residents who reside in eligible portions of Wards 3, 4 and Ward 5 (zip codes: 44320, 44311, 44307, 44302) can apply to receive one of the remaining free Ring Cameras. Cameras are being made available as a part of the City’s concerted effort to address crime hotspots.

The zip codes in Wards 3, 4 and 5 were selected based on the 2022 crime hotspot map provided by the Akron Police Department.

As a crime deterrent, the Doorbell Camera will provide added visibility into neighborhoods. The Ring Camera and accompanying app function as a neighborhood watch and provide residents with the ability to share video and/or photos of criminal activities across the platform. A bonus for users is the camera’s intercom (two-way mic/speaker functionality), in addition to the ability to view activity from the convenience of the Ring App.

The Application period will reopen on Friday, September 15, 2023. Applications must be submitted online via this link. Terms and conditions apply.

Both homeowners and renters are eligible to apply. Renters will be required to submit a landlord attestation in conjunction with the program application to be considered for a camera. The attestation can be found at:  https://bit.ly/landlordattestation.

Supplies are limited. There is a limit of one camera per household. Previous recipients need not re-apply. Applications will be accepted until the 35 eligible households have been identified and approved.

Applicants are required to have completed an application with the City’s approval prior to picking up their doorbell camera.

Cameras will be distributed at the Office of the Clerk at 166 S. High Street, 3rd Floor, Akron by appointment only.  Recipients must provide valid identification to receive their cameras.
