A resolution that could make it easier for felons who served their time to find employment with the city led to impassioned debate at Council Monday evening. Council President Garry Moneypenny said that even after reading the resolution several times, he did not understand what it would accomplish. He recalled that Council passed “ban the box” legislation a little over a year ago that is widely recognized as a key to giving convicted ex-felons a fair chance competing for jobs. Akron’s incoming law director, Patricia Ambrose Rubright, said the proposed resolution could actually hurt ex-felons by calling for certain qualifying questions to be eliminated in Akron Civil Service Commission personnel assessments. Time was taken on the resolution.
