Legislation goes to City Council for purchase of Highland Square property

July 19, 2010

The City is moving ahead with plans to purchase property in anticipation of attracting a grocer to provide a store for Highland Square. Mayor Don Plusquellic announced the plan in his State of the City address in March.

Plusquellic will ask Akron City Council Monday, July 19 to consider approval to enter into a contract for the purchase of 1.9 acres of land and buildings at West Market Street and North Portage Path. The sales agreement is between the City and Albrecht Incorporated and involves Albrecht-owned property between Market, Portage Path, Edgerton Road and Highland Avenue. "Members of city council understand the importance of this project. We need to move forward on this and help provide the people in Highland Square a much needed resource---a grocery store," said Mayor Plusquellic.

Akron and Albrecht have been operating under a Joint Development Agreement This contract would replace that and give the City sole control over the development. The agreement sets the purchase price at $3.1 million.
