Legislation permitting the construction of a new apartment building with first-floor retail space was approved by Council Monday evening. The development plans were scrutinized by Council after neighboring residents expressed concerns about parking and excessive growth in Highland Square. Council-at-large representative Jeff Fusco, chair of the planning committee, met with residents on several occasions and negotiated changes to the development plans that satisfied the residents' concerns. Also Monday, Suzie Graham, president of Downtown Akron Partnership, addressed Council on behalf of downtown restaurant owners who are objecting to recent appeals by food truck operators to change Akron's laws restricting their operation in the city. Graham said mobile food trucks do not sustain the community through taxes and employment like brick and mortar restaurants, and they will take business away from restaurants.
