Fire Hydrant Painting Program, Two New Apartment Buildings Approved

April 11, 2018

After several weeks of debate, City Council approved a $175,000 budget for painting fire hydrants. In addition to protecting the hydrants against corrosion, different paint colors tell fire fighters what pressure is available at each hydrant. Also approved Monday were conditional use zoning requests to build a 39-unit affordable housing development on Vern Odom Blvd., and a seven unit apartment building on Eastwood Ave. During the public comment period at the end of the council meeting, dozens of homeless residents from Second Chance Village asked council to amend zoning laws so that they can continue to live in tents in the Middleburg neighborhood.
