City seeks Highland Square grocer

The City of Akron seeks a Grocer owner/operator to develop a grocery store at the corner of West Market Street, North Portage Path and Edgerton road. The physical size can be between 3,000 and 12,000 square feet. Site and building are available immediately.

Project requirements are that the operator will provide full grocery services including fresh meats and produce with minimum hours of Monday-Saturday 8 am to 8 pm. Operating hours on Sunday would be desirable. The following information is available at

The City of Akron will support the operator's application for grants and low interest loans and will assist the operator in identifying and applying for available funds. The city may also consider a below market rental structure during startup and/or a package development that allows the developer to also purchase the Highland Square East building, from which the income can subsidize the grocery store.

Interested applicants must return a letter of intent by Friday, February 11, 2011. Please include a name and contact information for project lead, and names and organization affiliation of proposed partners.

The deadline for proposals is March 11, 2011. Please include the following information:

  • Qualifications, including resumes of principle investors or managers. Please describe any previous experience running a food service business. Include a current or previous business addresses.
  • A proposed business plan for a grocery store at 857/859 West Market Street Akron Ohio 44303. Include a description of the proposed business, business structure, product mix to be carried, financial projections, marketing plan and approximate size of store.
  • Proposed scope of work for construction, build out andstocking of store including estimated costs and funding sources.
  • Any special requirements that your store may need to make the project feasible.
