City leaders to speak at Ward 4 community open house

February 23, 2011

Akron residents who want to know what their government leaders' visions are for Akron and its 4th Ward are invited to attend a community open titled "Our City, Our Ward" at Buchtel High School on Saturday, March 5, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Organized by Ward 4 Councilperson Russel C. Neal Jr., representatives from all levels of government are expected to talk about their goals and objectives, explain how their offices are serving the citizenry, and share information about opportunities to participate in local initiatives and gain access to available services.

Invited representatives include:

Don Plusquellic, Mayor of the City of Akron

David James, Superintendent of Akron Public Schools

Cazzell Smith, Summit County Representative, 5th District

Vernon Sykes, Ohio State Representative, 44th District

Tom Sawyer, Ohio State Senate Representative, 28th District

Betty Sutton, U.S. House Representative, 13th District

"Our City, Our Ward is open to all Akron residents, though it will focus more on Ward 4," said Councilperson Neal. "I encourage residents to attend and to give some thought to the roles they can play in their neighborhood's development, such as organizing a block club or block watch, creating community garden spaces or volunteering for community events."

Display tables for organizations to explain their services, solutions and assistance are available. For more information or to register an organization for a table, contact Ward 4 Councilperson Russel C. Neal Jr., 330-212-3034, or
