Pat Simmons, Chief Executive Officer of the Akron Zoo, and Daisy, a South American banded armadillo, visited Council Monday evening to talk about Grizzly Ridge, the zoo’s $12.8 million new exhibit; announce the dates for Akron Community Days; and ask for support for the Akron Zoo’s renewal levy in November. Simmons said the renewal levy will cost the owner of a $100,000 home $23 per year, and the money will go towards feeding animals and the zoo’s growth and renovation. Grizzly Ridge opens July 20. Akron Community Days will be August 25-29. Akron residents get free zoo admission during Community Days. In other news, Council agreed to form a special committee to evaluate the merits of allowing food trucks to operate in Akron.
