Zoning amendment paves way for green paving alternatives

April 05, 2016

City Council amended a long-standing zoning code to allow for green paving alternatives within the city. The new code permits private developers to consider using permeable materials including bricks, stones and special types of concrete and blacktop on parking and driving surfaces. Under the old code, only blacktop or concrete were acceptable. City officials hope the new code reduces storm-water runoff into the sewer system. Council also discussed legislation Monday evening that will allow the city to issue up to a $5 million bond to reimburse the city for its legal fees and to pay back wages, benefits and legal fees to firefighters who sued Akron over its promotion policies and tests.
