Voters to decide on election cost-cutting proposal

July 31, 2012

A charter amendment proposed to save Akron taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars by electing all city officials on the same four-year cycle was passed by Council and will now go to the voters for approval. The amendment will put all City Council members and the Mayor on the same election schedule beginning in 2015. All will serve four-year terms, saving an estimated $200,000 for each election eliminated by increasing the current two-year terms of Ward Council Representatives. Council also passed a resolution supporting the 7.9 mil Akron school levy on the November ballot. Akron City Council now begins its summer recess. The next scheduled Council meeting is Monday, September 10.
