Council President Garry Moneypenny and Mayor Don Plusquellic introduced legislation at Monday’s Council meeting that could resolve some of the financial woes facing University Park Alliance and East Akron Community House. UPA would receive $158,000 from the city if other partners contribute a matching total of $158,000 and the Knight Foundation commits $316,000. UPA owes $630,000 to creditors. The legislation addressing EACH will prevent foreclosure on the East Akron Community House facility. A maximum of $60,000 would be paid directly to the mortgage holder and utility companies over the next six months. Both ordinances acknowledge the need to protect the millions of dollars the city has invested in the organizations. The Planning Committee and Council are expected to discuss the legislation next Monday.
