South Martha Avenue will soon be known as Innovation Way, to better reflect the East Akron road's symbolic role in the Goodyear redevelopment project.
Akron City Council is expected to pass an ordinance authorizing the name change when it approves the consent agenda next week.
The street is central to the $900 million Goodyear redevelopment plan, which includes an improved Technical Center, new World Headquarters, retail office space, recreation facilities and a hotel.
Economic Development and Job Creation Committee Chair Terry Albanese (W-6) said the renaming is symbolic of the East Akron area's historic role in the nation's industrial sector, as well as the potential for the future that the new development project creates.
"This whole project is an innovation in and of itself given the collaboration that exists to make it happen," Albanese said of the city, county and private sectors that support the project's success. "For Goodyear it's significant for the company's history and for what they're doing for the future.
"Anything we can do to celebrate and showcase technical innovation in Akron is a good thing."
