Police officers to get body cameras

September 29, 2015

Council learned on Monday that Akron was one of a dozen mid-sized cities nationwide to be awarded grants to buy body cameras for police officers. The only catch is that the city had to match the $370,000 grant, which Council agreed to do. The grant and matching funds will allow the police department to purchase and deploy 245 body cameras. Council also approved legislation authorizing two lease agreements for gas and oil wells to be drilled on city-owned property, but not before a serious-minded discussion about home rule versus state laws and the environmental impact of oil and gas wells.
