Council approved a conditional use zoning Monday evening that will allow PNC Bank to install an oversized, lighted logo atop One Cascade Plaza. Planning Committee Chair Jeff Fusco said that lighted signs atop tall buildings convey that business is thriving downtown. Another conditional use zoning request approved by Council was for a Verizon Wireless cell tower in West Hill. Though nearly every Council member expressed opposition to the cell tower, Council had to approve it or face a potential lawsuit. The Federal Communications Commission regulates cell towers, and cities are powerless to stop their construction if they meet Federal regulations. Council members expressed dismay that Verizon and its representatives refused to negotiate the location of the tower.
