City Council approved an ordinance that ends retirement healthcare benefits for elected officials and city employees hired after January 1, 2017. Council also was presented with a new option from the administration to reduce the city's healthcare costs by replacing retirees' supplemental benefits with a monthly stipend. An option presented to Council several weeks ago would require retirees to pay the same as current city employees for supplemental benefits and to pay a surcharge for family coverage. Either option could save the city $5-6 million a year.
