New animal neglect, tethering law passes

April 08, 2015

Dogs can’t speak for themselves, so City Council is speaking up for them and telling Akron residents to take care of their pets or face serious consequences. Council approved legislation Monday evening that makes animal neglect and cruelty Misdemeanors of the First Degree, which could result in stiff fines and jail time for offenders. The new law puts restrictions on outdoor tethering and requires that owners provide shelter, food and water for their animals. In extreme weather conditions, the new law requires that pets be taken indoors.
