Five prospective medical marijuana growers asked for and received conditional use zoning approvals for growing facilities during Monday evening's council meeting. All five will now apply to the state for a license to grow medical marijuana, but the competition will be stiff. Only 24 growing facilities will be licensed statewide, and many businesses and communities are vying for these new start-ups which promise profits for owners and jobs and taxes for the communities in which they locate. Earlier in the day at the end of the committee meetings, the mayor and his administration presented their proposal for raising Akron's income tax by one quarter-percent to 2.5 percent.
