A long-awaited development downtown and Akron’s first new housing development in a decade came one step closer to reality Monday evening. Council approved an ordinance that will allow the Bowery Project to obtain a Section 108 government loan backed by the city. The Bowery Project is the redevelopment of five downtown buildings and includes housing and retail space. Council also approved a land swap with Akron Schools and Summit County to obtain land on the west side where developers want to build 90 new houses.
