Grant would pay for bulletproof vests

October 24, 2011

Council approved legislation that authorizes Mayor Plusquellic to apply for a Bulletproof Vest Partnership Grant from the U.S. Bureau of Justice Assistance. The grant will pay between 20 and 50 percent of the cost to equip all Akron law enforcement officers with body armor. Council also approved legislation allowing the mayor to seek a High Visibility Enforcement Overtime Grant from the state. The grant would pay for traffic officers to monitor high-accident intersections for speed, DUI and seatbelt violations.
