Digital billboard decision delayed

September 25, 2012

A public hearing on the merits of digital billboards ended with Council taking time to further consider the proposal at Monday's Council meeting. After a Clear Channel Outdoor representative explained the company's proposal to replace seven static billboards with five new digital billboards, residents spoke one after another in opposition. They said that billboards in general do not contribute to the beautification of Akron, and current laws prohibit animated billboards. The Clear Channel representative said that the new digital billboards are supported by advertiser demand, will allow for more public service announcements, and can be a vital communication tool when Amber Alerts are issued.
