Akron City Council Monday night passed a resolution urging the U.S. Postal Service to keep open two of the four Akron post office branches set to be closed.
Ward 4 Councilwoman Renee Greene and Ward 10 Councilwoman Kelli Crawford offered the resolution which asks the postal service to reconsider closing the Maple Valley and the East Akron stations, citing the negative impact their closings would have on the elderly and low-income residents who live near those locations.
"We realize the postal service must do what it can to cut costs in these days of increased electronic communication and the current economic conditions, but many residents of my ward really do rely on the Maple Valley post office to conduct their important daily affairs," Greene said.
The Maple Valley station is at 1518 Copley Rd., and the East Akron station in Ward 10 is at 1763 Goodyear Blvd. Other Akron stations on the short list to close are the downtown and Chapel Hill post offices.
