Council Takes Aim at Assualt Weapons

February 28, 2018

Following a school massacre in Florida and a week of anxiety and fear at many local schools, Akron City Council passed a resolution urging the Ohio General Assembly to ban military-style assault weapons, magazines with a capacity greater than 10 rounds, and modifications that allow guns to fire rapidly simulating an automatic weapon. The resolution was not supported by the Public Safety Committee with three council members asking for more time to consider alternative resolutions, but Council as a whole passed it by a vote of 11 to 2 Monday evening. Council also held public hearings on two medical marijuana issues, giving its approval to one company’s request to add a dispensary to its growing facility on Buchholzer Boulevard and approving a second growing facility on South Main Street.
