Ward 9 - Akron City Council Monday night turned down a request to establish a gaming arcade near Rolling Acres Mall.
Council rejected Larry Blair's petition for a conditional use permit to operate an arcade and skilled gaming business at 2270 Romig Rd. after hearing opposing testimony during a public hearing on the matter.
One resident expressed concern about a gaming business possibly situated so close to a Life Skills Center, an alternative charter school for at-risk students.
Further, the city Planning Department and Planning Commission recommended the petition's disapproval because the arcade would be inconsistent with the standards set for the Rolling Acres area.
"Arcades require a conditional use to open in a retail district," said Economic Development and Job Creation Committee Chair Terry Albanese (W-6). "The proposed use won't conform to the goals and objectives of the Rolling Acres redevelopment Plan."
