Council President Marco Sommerville presided over a Council meeting last night that he wasn’t supposed to be at.
Sommerville departed Akron early Friday to attend a trade show in Hanover, Germany, but the volcanic ash cloud hovering over Europe grounded him in Toronto. He was part of a delegation from the City that had 50 appointments arranged with foreign companies looking for a U.S. foothold. The only Akron representative able to make it to Hanover was Bob Bowman, Deputy Mayor for Economic Development, who departed a day before the rest of the delegation.
“Bob will meet with those 50 companies by himself, so he’ll be very busy,” said Sommerville. “I tried everything I could to get to Hanover, but with so many flights cancelled because of the volcanic ash, it was impossible.”
Getting back to Akron proved almost as difficult for Sommerville, who was unable to secure a return flight until late Sunday.
