A resolution urging Akron residents to support a renewal levy for Summit County Children's Services passed unanimously, but a resolution urging support for Issue 3 sparked debate on the Council floor Monday evening before passing by a 10 - 3 vote. Issue 3 is a Charter Amendment that will cut city election costs by increasing terms of ward Council members to four years and aligning elections of all city officials. It will save as much as $200,000 for every two-year election it eliminates. It also will limit pay raises for Council members and the mayor. Council President Marco Sommerville, who co-sponsored the legislation with Mayor Plusquellic, said the resolution was necessary to allow supporters to place signs on city property. Council representatives Bruce Kilby, Mike Williams and Linda Omobien opposed the cost-cutting legislation and the resolution.
