At Monday evening's Council meeting, just hours after Mayor Don Plusquellic announced that he had picked Council President Marco Sommerville to join his cabinet as Planning Director, the 24-year Ward 3 Council Representative and 14-year Council President resigned his leadership position and acknowledged that the Dec. 17 Council meeting would be his last. Ward 10 Council Representative Garry Moneypenny was elected by his peers to replace Sommerville as Council President. Moments later, Jeff Fusco (At large) resigned as President Pro Tem and nominated Ken Jones (W5) as his replacement. He said he resigned to allow for minority representation in Council leadership. "I recognize the value of diversity in our city and our community, it is one of our greatest strengths," said Fusco. Jones was elected to the position.
