Council hears new plan to save services in East Akron

June 03, 2014

New legislation was introduced at Monday’s Council meeting that will allow the city to buy the building at 550 South Arlington Street from which East Akron Community House provided services. Mayor Don Plusquellic, who co-sponsored the legislation with Council president Garry Moneypenny, said the goal is to ensure that the building remains open for the delivery of social services to the East Akron community, regardless of whether the future providers are EACH or other non-profit entities. “This legislation allows us to secure the building and by doing that work with whomever to provide those services,” Plusquellic said. First Merit Bank holds the mortgage and has begun the foreclosure process. EACH continues to struggle to find any sources of funding for programs.
