Council bids longest farewell to five outgoing members

December 22, 2009

Akron City Council Monday night passed five historic resolutions of appreciation honoring outgoing Council members who will be replaced in the new year.

At Large Councilmen John Conti and Jim Shealey, Ward 4 Councilwoman Renee Greene, Ward 6 Councilwoman Terry Albanese and Ward 8 Councilman Raymond W. Cox III were all honored with resolutions, words of praise from fellow Council members and standing ovations during an emotional farewell at the close of the last meeting of Council before winter recess.

Council President Marco Sommerville said he’d never bid farewell to five sitting Council members during his more than 20 years serving on Council. Some outgoing members who lost bids for reelection in November had served for nearly as long as Sommerville (W-3).

The longest-serving, Conti, was first elected to Council in 1991. Cox, the shortest to serve, was appointed last February to replace former Ward 8 Councilman Bob Keith.

“We had a lot of good people who served the city well,” Sommerville said. “When we come back at the first of the year we’ll have the benefit of many different voices and personalities making decisions in the best interests of the people of Akron.”

The new 2010-2011 session of Council will resume Jan. 4, 2010.
