Akron City Council Monday night offered its blessing to officially raise the speed limit from 55 to 65 miles per hour along Interstate 77 between Vernon Odom Boulevard and Cleveland-Massillon Road.
An Ohio Department of Transportation study concluded that 65 miles per hour is a safe and reasonable speed of travel along that stretch of the interstate, now that it has been widened from two to three lanes. The city of Fairlawn and the State Highway Patrol agreed. All that was needed was a resolution from Council.
As soon as Council’s resolution officially requesting an increase to the speed limit reaches ODOT, the department will install revised speed limit signage along the five-mile stretch of the highway.
