Council accepts Kurt resignation from Ward 8 seat

March 08, 2011

City Council passed a resolution at its March 7 Council meeting accepting the resignation of Ward 8 Councilwoman Sandra Kurt. Kurt resigned to accept an appointment on Summit County Council.

Council President Marco Sommerville said he is assembling a special committee to review candidates for her replacement and appointed Ward 7 Councilwoman Tina Merlitti as its Chair. He set March 16 as the deadline for interested Ward 8 residents to apply for the vacant seat.

"Sandra served her ward well and was a valuable asset on many committees," Sommerville said. "I'm sorry to see her go, but I'm also thankful that she will continue to serve our community on an even larger scale with County Council. Council as a whole wishes her well."

In a statement released by Kurt, she said that her time on City Council was fulfilling.

"My time on City Council has been a rewarding and incredibly valuable experience. Council President Sommerville and my colleagues on Council have been a pleasure to work with and I truly appreciate their advice and assistance. Mayor Plusquellic and his cabinet and staff are true professionals who always have been willing to share their expertise and talents to help me serve Ward 8. And of course, I appreciate the residents of Ward 8 for their involvement in our community and their willingness to let me know when there are issues to be addressed. I have truly enjoyed my time as Ward 8 Councilwoman. I remain proud to represent my Ward 8 constituents, even if I'm doing so in a different legislative body."
