Complaints prompt Council to rethink tire sales, Family Dollar

January 13, 2015

Council is considering an amendment to the zoning code that will stop retail businesses from selling tires unless their property is zoned for commercial use. The amendment addresses frequent citizen complaints about businesses with unsightly stacks of new and sometimes old tires. Complaints also were raised during a public hearing about a proposed Family Dollar store on Brown Street. Nearby residents brought photographs of other Family Dollar stores in the Akron area to show that the company does not maintain its properties. Monday’s meeting began with Council congratulating Ophelia Averitt on her retirement as president of the Akron Chapter of the NAACP.
