City awarded funding for energy efficient homes

February 21, 2011

The City of Akron has been granted funds from the Department of Energy in an effort to make building an energy efficient home more affordable in the city. Rebates of up to $25,000 are available to home builders or individuals who build a home which meets the energy standard.

Applicants will be required to follow the Department of Energy's E-Scale performance path based on the Home Energy Rating System (HERS) to indicate a home's efficiency. The City of Akron is requiring a minimum of 50 on the e-scale to receive any funding. This means the home is 50% more efficient than a typical newly built home. The lower the e-scale number, the more money will be awarded. Awards range from $15,000 - $25,000.

To apply, download and complete a Home Energy Rebate Reservation Form at www.akronliving.org. Submit the completed form to the City of Akron. This completed form will set aside funding until construction is complete. Reservations are valid for up to six months. Additional terms and conditions are available on the Akron Living website.
