Akron Muslims sound alarm, call for healing

City Council’s public comment period again took center stage Monday evening when Minister Stephen H. Muhammad of the Muhammad Mosque of Akron told Council that Akron’s neighborhoods and communities are in desperate need of a healing. “It is our intent to sound the alarm that a crisis is and has been underway in our community,” said Muhammad, who also is a member of the Coalition for a Safe Community. Youths who commit crimes feel unwanted by their community, hunted by police and have no hope for the future, he said, adding that Coalition for a Safe Community and the Stop the Violence Movement of Akron stand ready to aid the city in its fight on youth crime.
