After School Program wins Council praise, funding

February 09, 2011

Akron school's After School Program was awarded $185,000 in funding at the Jan. 31 council meeting. The After School Program provides expanded learning opportunities after school hours to 4,750 students at 27 elementary and 3 middle schools. This is the 11th consecutive year that Akron has provided funding to the program.

"Our contribution is important because other potential funders see our support and long-standing relationship with this program and look favorably upon that," said At large Councilman Mike Williams. In addition to city funding, the After School Program receives funding from grants, foundations and other sources. Its annual operating budget is $2.5 million.
