Sommerville delays vote to increase curbside collection fees
Council President Marco Sommerville delayed by at least a week a vote that will increase garbage collection fees. The new legislation will raise rates $1.50 a month for households that recycle and $2.00 a month for those that do not. Households covered by the Homestead Exemption, which is for those over the age of 65, will see a $1.50 a month increase. Council’s Public Service Committee asked that the legislation be added to the consent agenda, which would have likely resulted in its passage without discussion at the next Council meeting. Sommerville asked that it not be placed on the consent agenda until he and the administration can discuss the affect of a rate increase on the elderly.
