Council to consider limits on street memorials

A letter signed by three West Side city block club presidents and read at Council Monday evening asked Council to set time limits on street-side memorials. The issue is how long a memorial - usually consisting of stuffed animals, candles, balloons and flowers attached to a telephone pole - should be allowed to remain on display. (more...)

"Although we completely understand the sentiment associated with the practice, neighbors are complaining because it looks bad and detracts from the neighborhood," the block club presidents wrote. They suggested that such displays could be limited to the time from someone's death until after their funeral. Ward 4 Councilman Russ Neal said he was aware of the issue, has talked to the city's law department and will draft legislation to address the issue if appropriate.
