Committee recommends Montgomery for vacant Ward 8 seat
A special committee created to select a replacement for Ward 8 Councilwoman Sandra Kurt will recommend Phil Montgomery, an internal auditor for Time Warner Cable and vice president of Summit County Young Democrats, for Kurt's vacant seat at tonight's City Council meeting.

City budget gets Council approval
A $528.8 million city budget was passed by Council at its Monday meeting. The budget includes $141 million for wages, benefits and related expenses, of which almost $85 million is for police, fire and safety forces.

Joy Park gets club; city tackles "cold case" files
Legislation approving a no-cost lease of unused space at Joy Park Community Center to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Reserve was passed by Council Monday.

Council accepts Kurt resignation from Ward 8 seat
City Council passed a resolution at its March 7 Council meeting accepting the resignation of Ward 8 Councilwoman Sandra Kurt. Kurt resigned to accept an appointment on Summit County Council.

Library goes to dogs
A doggie day care business got the okay from Akron City Council to establish a day care, grooming and boarding business in an old library at 485 South Canton Road in Ellet. Ward 6 Councilman Bob Otterman said Council's approval of the legislation will give students in Ellet High School's Animal Management program opportunities to get jobs and gain practical experience.

Informational meeting on Senate Bill 5 set for Friday
On Friday, March 4, at 6:30 p.m., Ward 6 Councilman Robert Otterman will hold an informational meeting on Senate Bill 5 at the Ellet Community Center, 2449 Wedgewood Drive. Representatives of the Akron police, fire, and city workers unions along with other labor unions will be there to speak. Senator Tom Sawyer will also be there to talk about the bill. City leaders to speak at Ward 4 community open house
Akron residents who want to know what their government leaders' visions are for Akron and its 4th Ward are invited to attend a community open titled "Our City, Our Ward" at Buchtel High School on Saturday, March 5, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Rochling selects Akron for new manufacturing facility
Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic announced today that the city has landed a German high-performance plastics manufacturing company that will come to the city with more than a hundred new jobs for Akron area residents.

City awarded funding for energy efficient homes
The City of Akron has been granted funds from the Department of Energy in an effort to make building an energy efficient home more affordable in the city. Rebates of up to $25,000 are available to home builders or individuals who build a home which meets the energy standard.

Council approves funding for homeless veterans
City Council passed two ordinances at the Feb. 7council meeting that will give 1.6 acres of city-owned land plus $10,000 to Valor Home, a volunteer organization that is building Summit County's first transitional home for veterans and their dependents.
