Ward 9 meeting cancelled
Ward 9 Councilman Mike Freeman has cancelled his ward meeting for Tuesday, May 3, because it is Election Day. His next scheduled ward meeting is Tuesday, June 7, 7 p.m., at the Kenmore Senior Community Center, 880 Kenmore Blvd.

Council paves way for street, sidewalk improvements
The passage of two ordinances and a resolution by City Council will make for smoother sailing on sections of West Market and South Main Streets. West Market will be resurfaced between Wolcott Road and Pershing Avenue, and West Gate Circle and Twin Oaks Road. South Main Street improvements will include paving, constructing curbs and sidewalks, installing lights and planting trees around Bridgestone America's new offices. Sections of curbs, driveway approaches and roof drain pipes on almost 40 other streets throughout the city also will be improved under the city's City-Wide Sidewalk Program.

City officals to discuss sewers at Ward 1 meeting
Akron city officials will discuss Akron's sewer system seperation plans and answer questions at Ward 1 Councilman Jim Hurley's monthly ward meeting, Wednesday, April 20, 6:30 p.m. at Patterson Park Community Center, 800 Patterson Ave. Council ward meetings are open to all city residents.

Sommerville makes new committee assignments

401 Lofts gets Council approval
Legislation was passed at Monday's Council meeting that paves the way for construction of more student housing in downtown Akron. 401 Lofts - a $12 million development near the intersection of Exchange and Main Streets - will create 200 construction jobs that will generate $190,000 in city income tax revenue and bring an additional 310 residents to downtown, said Jeff Fusco, Chairman of Planning Committee.

Sewer separation projects win approval
City Council approved legislation Monday night that allows Akron to move forward with two projects that will reduce combined sewer overflows despite the fact that the city's comprehensive overflow reduction plan is in limbo while the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Ohio EPA, City of Akron and Federal Judge John Adams debate its merits.

Montgomery is new Ward 8 Councilman
Phillip J. Montgomery took the seat of former Ward 8 Councilwoman Sandra Kurt for the first time at last night's City Council meeting. Montgomery was sworn into office Friday after being selected from a field of 13 candidates to complete Kurt's term.
