Council passes amended sewer rate increase; establishes discount for low-income residents

Residents turn out for hearing on proposed sewer rate increases
Approximately 40 Akron residents showed up at a special Akron City Council public hearing Thursday night to hear details and speak their minds on a plan to raise sewer rates in order to pay for a federally mandated $500 million upgrade to the city’s combined sewer system.

City applying for $6 million grant to bring back laid off firefighters
Akron City Council Monday night approved legislation authorizing the mayor to apply for a $6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security which could pay for the rehiring of some if not all of the 38 Akron firefighters laid off over the summer.

Council approves city employee raise freeze
More than one-fifth of approximately 1,995 Akron city employees will not receive raises next year, eliminating $500,000 from the city’s 2010 budget as it works to keep costs contained under tight budget restraints.
